The Norwegian Quota Scheme is a funding scheme offered by the Norwegian Government to students from developing countries, Central and Eastern Europe, and former Soviet states for studies at institutions of higher education in Norway. This funding scheme aims at offering specially designed, research-based Master's Degrees taught in English. The Quota Scheme also offers funding for Ph.D.-programmes and a one-year course in advanced Norwegian Language. Quota Scheme applicants should come from universities/institutions with formal cooperation agreements with the University of Oslo.
Who May Apply?
Applicants for admission under the Quota Scheme must fulfill certain criteria in order to be considered for admission. Admission is limited and therefore extremely competitive.
Nationality
Only applicants from countries included in the list of countries eligible for Quota Scheme funding will be considered. Please note that applicants who live in another country than their country of citizenship, either temporary or permanently, cannot apply. Applicants must have lived at least one year in their home country before they apply. Applicants from an eligible country, who are residing in another country on the list, may in some cases be considered. Quota Scheme students are expected to return home on completion of their studies in Norway.
Institutional Cooperation
Applicants should come from institutions with which the University of Oslo has a cooperation agreement. Potential applicants should check with their home institution to determine whether they have a cooperation agreement with the University of Oslo.
Women
Women are encouraged to apply. The University of Oslo gives priority to female applicants under the Quota Scheme.

Funding
The Quota Scheme is a scholarship programme, but the funding is given as part loan/part grant. Students receive money from the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund. After completing the programme and providing documentary evidence of return to his/her home country, the student's outstanding loan is converted to scholarship. If residence is taken in Norway within ten years after termination of studies, the scholarship is converted back to a loan and must be repaid.
Criteria for application
Required Educational Background
The Quota Scheme is aimed at postgraduate students. Applicants must fulfil the basic entrance requirements for matriculation at a Norwegian institution of higher education. In addition to the basic entrance requirements, applicants for the Quota Scheme must provide documentary evidence of the following:
For Master's Degree programmes, the minimum requirement is three (3) years of study at university level, i.e. minimum Bachelor's Degree level (or equivalent).
For doctoral programmes, applicants must have a minimum of five (5) years of university-level studies in their chosen subject. For further information, click here.
For the one-year advanced Norwegian language programme, the minimum requirement is two (2) years of study at university level; however, applicants with a completed first degree will be given priority.
Grade requirement
Admission to these programmes is very competitive, and only applicants with excellent grades will be considered (minimum B+/ Upper second/GPA 3.0).
Proficiency in English
Documentation of English language skills is required for admission to any of the programmes offered under the Quota Scheme.
TOEFL minimum score 550 (paper-based) / 213 (computer-based) / 80 (iBT)
IELTS minimum band 6.0 academic test.

Subject knowledge
Applicants must have completed prior university studies in the subject of the programme to which they are applying. Please note that some of the Master's Degree programmes have additional admission criteria. For further information go to the website of the specific Master programme.
How to Apply
Due to the large number of Quota applicants to a limited number of Quota scholarships available, potential applicants must submit the online 'Request for Application Form' before they can receive the formal application form. The requests for application forms will be processed by the International Education Office and only applicants that fulfil all the formal Quota requirements will receive the application form. The deadline for submitting the online 'Request for Application Form' is 1 November 2008, in order for the students to have sufficient time to submit the Quota Scheme application and the required documents before the 1 December application deadline.

Two Doctoral Studentships at SPRU on Transitions to Sustainability’
SPRU (Science and Technology Policy Research) at the University of
Sussex is pleased to offer two DPhil positions, available to start in
October 2008.
The two doctoral positions are part of a larger research programme led
by Professor Frank W Geels and funded under a prestigious first round
grant from the European Research Council.
The title of the research programme is: Destabilisation of
sociotechnical regimes as the key to transitions towards
sustainability. This refers to the important emerging field of study
concerning non-incremental changes in transport, energy and food systems
necessary in order to achieve more sustainable societies a field in
which Professor Geels is a leading figure.
The theoretical framework for the programme involves an exploration of
the mechanisms and conditions under which existing systems or regimes
become unstable. This may partly be as a result of external pressure
(from policy makers or civil society), or partly because of changing
beliefs of industry actors. The research programme is multi-disciplinary
and will combine insights from sociology of technology,
neo-institutional theory, and evolutionary economics. Empirical work
focuses on the coal industry, car industry and (pig) farming industry,
using case studies as the main method.
The doctoral students will be expected to work as a key element of the
research programme under the personal supervision and direction of
Professor Geels. Their contributions will be intrinsic to achieving the
theoretical and empirical goals as specified in the awarded research

The successful applicants will receive a salary of ₤21,050 per year over
a period of forty-two months. During this period, the salary will be
subject to standard incremental advancement. This compares favourably

budget also includes provision for appropriate travel and a computer.

Microbiology - Discrimination of Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria

Integrated Renewable Energy Generation and Supply

Applications are invited for six PhD studentships at the Centre for Integrated Renewable Energy Generation and Supply (CIREGS) within the School of Engineering at Cardiff University.
In order to meet the UK government target of 10% of electricity supplies from renewable energy by 2010, an aspiration to double this by 2020 and the EU target of 15% of all energy from renewable sources by 2020, the renewable energy sources (RES) and distributed generation (DG) will play a major role in the future.
The integration of RES and DG will pose many research challenges, especially due to changes in the current network operational and control strategies and dynamic behavior of the network. It is recognised that the future electricity network, both at the transmission and distribution level, can no longer play a passive role. The structure of the network will be highly interconnected with smaller controllable areas, with more responsive demand side loads and DGs. The application of power electronics such as FACTS, HVDC will offer the potential to manage the power flows while enhancing the controllability of the network under dynamic operating conditions. The estimation of the state of the entire and/or controllable areas of the network and coordinate control of these areas will become essential tools.
Recognising the anticipated changes in the future electricity supply system, CIREGS is developing research capacity in integrated renewable energy generation and supply, including “Smart Grids” of the future and contributing towards meeting the UK medium-term renewable energy targets.

PAIS East Asia Postgraduate Research Fellowship

The Department of Politics and International Studies (PAIS) invites applications for one East Asia Postgraduate Research Fellowship to fund three years of doctoral research at the University of Warwick.
This doctoral research will form part of PAIS's programme to consolidate the study of East Asia in the department and across the University. The successful candidate will be supervised by Professor Chris Hughes in PAIS. In addition to pursuing their own doctoral research, the holder of the Fellowship will be expected under Professor Hughes's direction to form part of a research team and provide assistance in a range of activities to promote research on East Asia. PAIS has one of the largest concentrations in the UK of research expertise in the contemporary international and domestic East Asian politics.
The successful candidates should have an interest in the international and domestic politics of East Asia, broadly in one or more of the disciplines of Political Science, International Relations, International Political Economy, Security Studies, East Asian Studies, and Japanese Studies. Professor Hughes would particularly welcome applications in his research specialism of Japanese foreign and security policy, but also seeks applications in areas such as Japan-China relations, East Asian regional security more generally, and East Asian regionalism and political economy.
The Fellowship will be highly competitive. Successful candidates should have obtained at least an upper second class honours degree (or equivalent) from a recognised institution of higher education before 31 July 2008. The possession of a MA in a relevant discipline would also be an advantage, as would some pre-existing knowledge of East Asia. The Department of Politics and International Studies (PAIS) invites applications for one East Asia Postgraduate Research Fellowship to fund three years of doctoral research at the University of Warwick.
This doctoral research will form part of PAIS's programme to consolidate the study of East Asia in the department and across the University. The successful candidate will be supervised by Professor Chris Hughes in PAIS. In addition to pursuing their own doctoral research, the holder of the Fellowship will be expected under Professor Hughes's direction to form part of a research team and provide assistance in a range of activities to promote research on East Asia. PAIS has one of the largest concentrations in the UK of research expertise in the contemporary international and domestic East Asian politics.
The successful candidates should have an interest in the international and domestic politics of East Asia, broadly in one or more of the disciplines of Political Science, International Relations, International Political Economy, Security Studies, East Asian Studies, and Japanese Studies. Professor Hughes would particularly welcome applications in his research specialism of Japanese foreign and security policy, but also seeks applications in areas such as Japan-China relations, East Asian regional security more generally, and East Asian regionalism and political economy.
The Fellowship will be highly competitive. Successful candidates should have obtained at least an upper second class honours degree (or equivalent) from a recognised institution of higher education before 31 July 2008. The possession of a MA in a relevant discipline would also be an advantage, as would some pre-existing knowledge of East Asia. Applicants should have the requisite standard of English, and some ability in Japanese or another East Asian language would be useful. Home/EU and Overseas students are eligible for the Fellowship.
The scholarship includes for three years:

A maintenance grant in line with the UK Research Council standard stipend (£12,940 for full-time award holders in 2008/2009)
Successful candidates may be asked in consultation with Professor Hughes to undertake up to 110 hours of assistance in a year. This assistance may take the form of research and/or teaching and/or administrative duties.

PhD scholarships Nanophotonics for Terabit Communications (NATEC)
A new research centre focusing on nanophotonics for terabit communications is being established at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The centre is based on donations from a private foundation, VILLUM KANN RASNMUSSEN FONDEN.
The NATEC centre will, in particular, perform research on light-matter interaction in semiconductor quantum dots and photonic crystal structures and explore the use of such nanostructured materials for realizing photonic chips operating in the terabit regime.
The centre is a strongly focused effort involving nanofabrication, experimental characterisation based on nanoscopy and ultrafast lasers, fundamental theory including topology optimization, and systems experiments and will provide ample opportunities for cross-fertilization between these areas.

PhD Studentship: Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Award
Modelling Rupture of CO2 Pipelines
Department of Chemical Engineering
Reducing carbon dioxide emissions is considered to be the most effective
way of tackling the effects of global warming. This will require the
large-scale capture, transportation and storage of CO2.
In the case of coal fired power generation plants, pressurised pipelines are considered to be the most practical, and possibly the only option for transporting
the captured CO2 for subsequent storage.
Given the enormous amounts of CO2 contained in such pipelines (typically
several million tonnes), a prior knowledge of the release rate and
subsequent dispersion in the event of pipeline rupture is central to
assessing the failure impact. CO2 is toxic and when inhaled in large
concentrations can lead to asphyxiation.
This exciting PhD project aims to extend our award winning work
(http://www.ucl.ac.uk/chemeng/staff/mahgerefteh) to develop a computer
based model for predicting the failure consequences of CO2 pipelines.
The project carried out in close collaboration with a major industrial
partner is multidisciplinary involving a variety of subjects including,
fluid mechanics, mathematics, heat transfer, quantitative risk
assessment and computing. The experience gained is expected to equip the
prospective PhD graduate with job opportunities in a variety of
industrial sectors particularly in the oil and gas industry.
The successful candidate will be an outstanding First Class Chemical
Engineering or Mathematics graduate (although other relevant disciplines
will be considered) preferably with computing skills. The funding covers
full tuition fees plus maintenance over three years and is open to
suitably qualified overseas students.
UCL is consistently classed amongst the top Universities in the world.
The UCL Chemical Engineering department in particular received the
highest research rating in the most recent Government funded Research
Assessment Exercise placing it amongst the only three such departments
in the UK.

way of tackling the effects of global warming. This will require the
large-scale capture, transportation and storage of CO2.
In the case of coal fired power generation plants, pressurised pipelines are considered to be the most practical, and possibly the only option for transporting
the captured CO2 for subsequent storage.
Given the enormous amounts of CO2 contained in such pipelines (typically
several million tonnes), a prior knowledge of the release rate and
subsequent dispersion in the event of pipeline rupture is central to
assessing the failure impact. CO2 is toxic and when inhaled in large
concentrations can lead to asphyxiation.
This exciting PhD project aims to extend our award winning work
(http://www.ucl.ac.uk/chemeng/staff/mahgerefteh) to develop a computer
based model for predicting the failure consequences of CO2 pipelines.
The project carried out in close collaboration with a major industrial
partner is multidisciplinary involving a variety of subjects including,
fluid mechanics, mathematics, heat transfer, quantitative risk
assessment and computing. The experience gained is expected to equip the
prospective PhD graduate with job opportunities in a variety of
industrial sectors particularly in the oil and gas industry.
The successful candidate will be an outstanding First Class Chemical
Engineering or Mathematics graduate (although other relevant disciplines
will be considered) preferably with computing skills. The funding covers
full tuition fees plus maintenance over three years and is open to
suitably qualified overseas students.
UCL is consistently classed amongst the top Universities in the world.
The UCL Chemical Engineering department in particular received the
highest research rating in the most recent Government funded Research
Assessment Exercise placing it amongst the only three such departments
in the UK.
