Funded by the Excellence Initiative of the German federal and state governments this Graduate School aims at educating young scientists in the field of marine sciences. Within a global-change framework these encompass the natural sciences as well as the humanities. Besides becoming experts in their special field the PhD students will get a solid background across many disciplines of marine sciences.

Candidates holding a master or diploma degree are encouraged to submit a self-designed PhD project of three years duration related to one of the four Research Areas. With a starting date of November 1, 2008, these projects should be in line with present marine research topics covered by the Graduate School.

AT THE NORWEGIAN UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, TRONDHEIM
The Department of Foreign Languages at the Norwegian University of
Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim has available 2 PhD positions
connected to the research project Exhibiting Europe. The Construction of
European Integration and Identity in the Musée de l?Europe funded by the
Norwegian Research Council (NFR). This project seeks to understand how
?Europe? and the European Union are represented and constructed in
European-level exhibitions, the planned Musée de L?Europe and in
selected national (cultural and history) museums throughout Europe. The
positions are for 3 years. The starting date is 1 October 2008.
One of the two PhD positions will contribute to the first part-project
directed by Dr Stefan Krankenhagen. This will focus on the museums as
aesthetic spaces between different cultural fields: Firstly, between its
claim of presenting history and its cultural politics of constructing
memories and identities. Secondly, between ?encoding? and ?decoding?
constructions of Europeaness. And thirdly, between its history as a
space of education and its present status as a place of popular
?edutainment? and consumption as its most striking exhibition design.
Applicants for this PhD position should ideally have a background in
museum studies and/or cultural studies.
The second PhD position will contribute to the part-project directed by
Professor Wolfram Kaiser. It seeks to identify whether and how European
exhibitions and the Musée de l?Europe represent a cohesive master
narrative of EU history, and how national (history) museums have
developed and revised their representation of a common European and the
EU?s history. Applicants for this PhD position should ideally have a
background in contemporary history and/or cultural studies.
Both PhD students will spend their first year at the Norwegian
University of Science and Technology where they will have access to
research training and, if necessary, relevant (elementary) language
courses in Norwegian. The PhD student working with Dr Krankenhagen will
spend the second year at Humboldt University Berlin, Germany. The PhD
student working with Professor Kaiser will spend the second year at the
University of Portsmouth, England. For further information on the

Applicants must have obtained a Master?s degree with excellent results
or to complete a Master?s course before starting at NTNU. They should
have very good written and oral English and passive knowledge of
relevant other major European languages such as German and French.
Applicants must submit three copies of the following:
· Application letter;
· Concise statement of not more than 5 pages specifying their interest
in one of the two part-projects and outlining how their qualifications and
academic interests qualify them for conducting research in the field;
· CV with list of publications, if any, and information on
non-published work;
· Official transcripts or certified copies of University certificates.
These will not be returned.
· The names and email addresses of two referees who could comment on
their academic performance and abilities.
The successful applicants must participate in and complete the PhD
programme in Humanities and the Arts or in Historical and Cultural
Studies within the period of the appointment. The disciplines that are

The positions are remunerated according to salary level 43 in the
national salary scheme, gross NOK 325.600 (circa ? 40.000) annually, of
which 2 per cent is deducted for the State Pension scheme. The PhD
students will also receive an additional stipend for the year abroad and
funding for travel and accommodation for the necessary research in
museums and archives.
The appointment will be made in accordance with the current regulations
for fellowship appointments at universities in Norway. A contract will
be drawn up detailing the period of appointment and required duties.
The appointment will be made in accordance with the regulations in force
concerning State Employees and Civil Servants.
It is a political objective to achieve a balance of age and gender in
the national labour force and to recruit persons with an immigrant
background.

Doktorarbeit / PostDoc-Stelle: Modelling and optimisation of biomass-fed fuel cell systems
Max Planck / Fraunhofer Joint Research Initiative PROBIO
The Department of Physical and Chemical Process Engineering (Prof. Dr.-Ing. K. Sundmacher, www.mpi-magdeburg.mpg.de/research/groups/pcp/) at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in Magdeburg, Germany, is inviting applications for
PhD or Postdoc Position (TVöD E13, former BAT IIa): Modelling and optimisation of biomass-fed fuel cell systems
within the joint research initiative PROBIO of the Max Planck Institute together with two departments of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. The project is designed to develop an efficient technology for converting solid biomass into gases which after multi-step cleaning can be transformed into electricity and high-valued heat using fuel cells.
A special focus of our research activities is on model-based process synthesis. The project includes the completion of an already existing library of short-cut models for unit operations, the development of a suitable process superstructure, and its optimisation with numerical MINLP methods. Further tasks in this project are the system optimisation with respect to partial load behaviour, varying power demand and robustness against variation of biomass composition. The candidate will work in an interdisciplinary research team and will be advised by experienced senior scientists.
Suitable PhD candidates hold a Diploma degree (Dipl.-Ing.) or a Master degree (M.Sc.) or a Doctoral degree (Dr.-Ing. / PhD.) in chemical engineering or process engineering. Marks should be clearly above the average. Good knowledge of process modelling and of simulation using numerical tools (e.g. Matlab) is required. Additional knowledge of process optimisation tools is highly welcome. Good communication and team skills are indispensable.

Postdoctoral Scholarships.
In the research areas 2-5, a total of one
Postdoctoral Scholarship for Women

Successful candidates will be able to work in an outstanding research environment. They will profit from an innovative conception of mutual team support and an intensive mentoring programme. With their research they will be integrated into cross-disciplinary research teams, and in this research-oriented environment will receive systematic preparation for either an academic or non-academic career. The research-oriented graduate training will be effectively supported by a corresponding program of study and further education.
Applicants for Scholarships must hold a Master’s or equivalent degree with top marks, or a PhD in one of the relevant core areas. Scholarships for PhD candidates are €1,000 per month and run for a period of up to 3 years. Postdoctoral scholarships are €1,500 per month and run for a period of up to 3 years. Material and travel expenditures will also be paid. In Erfurt each scholar will have a workstation at his disposal. Scholars are requested to reside in Erfurt for the duration of their scholarship. Participation in seminars of the respective graduate school or the mentoring research teams is mandatory.

Course description:
The course in Transnational Law and Finance contains 120 ECTS credits that the students will
follow in two academic years and in three of the four participating institutions.
The Programme offers one year of core courses, which provide the fundamental competencies
at an advanced level, needed to be able to confront trans-national trade cases. The itinerary is
built in a complementary manner starting with the University of Deusto that will focus on the
European set up, and moving forward to a more comparative and worldwide approach in the
case of Tilburg.
1st Component. (Deusto)
In relation to methodology this semester sets the bases of problem solving and analytical
thinking at an advanced level counting on the cooperation and relevant case studies offered by
representatives of International Organizations dealing with experience in the field of
international transactions.
In relation to the contents developed, the Master begins offering a view of the main
achievements of those Organizations as well as an analysis of the main European Union
Instruments in Private International Law relevant for Trans-national Trade.
2nd component. (Tilburg)
During this period, the students move from the European level to the International context. The
international and comparative focus prepares them for working in international and emerging
markets. Also they begin having an option that prepares them to choose the specialization in
the coming year.
For the second year three specialization areas offered: Law and Finances in the Institute of Law
and Finance in Frankfurt University and European Business Law and Industrial and Intellectual
Property in the Robert Schumann Strasbourg University.
The Programme presents therefore two important elements:
