Commencing 1 November 2008 the University of Erfurt will award

Doctoral Scholarships

in the following research areas:
Interdisciplinary Study of Religion (Graduate School of the Max Weber Center,
the Interdisciplinary Forum for Religion and the Gotha Research Center)
Communication and Digital Media
a) Empirical Research in Economics and Behavioral Science
b) Monetary and Financial Economics
a) Literary Studies: Texts. Signs. Media.
b) Language and Mind
a) Transregional Area Studies
b) European Studies (Law, Economics, Social Sciences)

The Interdisciplinary Study of Religion program will offer several

Postdoctoral Scholarships.

In the research areas 2-5, a total of one

Postdoctoral Scholarship for Women

will be offered.

Successful candidates will be able to work in an outstanding research environment. They will profit from an innovative conception of mutual team support and an intensive mentoring programme. With their research they will be integrated into cross-disciplinary research teams, and in this research-oriented environment will receive systematic preparation for either an academic or non-academic career. The research-oriented graduate training will be effectively supported by a corresponding program of study and further education.
Applicants for Scholarships must hold a Master’s or equivalent degree with top marks, or a PhD in one of the relevant core areas. Scholarships for PhD candidates are €1,000 per month and run for a period of up to 3 years. Postdoctoral scholarships are €1,500 per month and run for a period of up to 3 years. Material and travel expenditures will also be paid. In Erfurt each scholar will have a workstation at his disposal. Scholars are requested to reside in Erfurt for the duration of their scholarship. Participation in seminars of the respective graduate school or the mentoring research teams is mandatory.

Deadline for applications is July 12th, 2008.

Applications for scholarships must include:
an outline of the dissertation or postdoctoral project (approx. 5 pages, with a clear delineation of the topic as well as the current state of research, method of approach and hypotheses; must also include a work schedule and projected date of completion)
curriculum vitae
a copy of the applicant’s undergraduate degree (can be submitted later)
A copy of the applicant’s master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation
A letter of recommendation or evaluation from a university teacher regarding the applicant’s character and qualifications

Applications must include the applicant’s choice of a research team. Information about the individual research teams can be found on the following pages:

A small number of other doctoral scholarships are available for outstanding individual projects in the humanities and social sciences.

Applicants for doctoral scholarships who are currently studying at Erfurt University must submit proof that they have simultaneously applied to an external source such as an aid program, endowment fund, etc. (confirmation of receipt from the respective organization). This rule does not apply to applicants for postdoctoral scholarships and to external applicants in general.
